The Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215. Richard I died in 1199, sixteen years before the charter was created.

In 1192, on his return journey, Richard I was seized near Vienna by Duke Leopold of Austria and later handed over to Emperor Henry VI, who held him for ransom.

In 1199, Richard I was struck by a bolt from a crossbow while besieging the castle of Châlus-Chabrol in Limousin. He died of gangrene a few days later.
