Multiple Christian kingdoms—Castile, Aragon, Navarre, and Portugal—fought independently and sometimes against each other during the Reconquista.

The fall of Granada on January 2, 1492, marked the final defeat of the last Muslim state on the Iberian Peninsula, ending the Reconquista.

The traditional timeline spans from the Muslim conquest in 711 and the first Christian resistance around 718 to the fall of Granada in 1492, roughly 780 years.

While religion played a role, political ambition, territorial expansion, and economic gain were equally or more important drivers of the Reconquista.

Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, served King Alfonso VI of Castile and later fought for the Muslim taifa of Zaragoza before conquering Valencia.

The Treaty of Granada initially permitted Muslims to remain. Forced conversions began in Granada in 1499–1500 and were imposed in Castile in 1502, with the final expulsion of Moriscos not occurring until 1609.

Historians mark the start of the Reconquista with the Christian victory at Covadonga in 722, which is widely considered the beginning of the long reconquest.

That battle was a major Christian victory, but the Reconquista continued until 1492 when Granada fell. Many smaller Muslim states remained for centuries.
