Bougainvillea Trivia Questions

It’s a woody vine (liana) that climbs via thorns, often trained as a shrub. In the wild, it can reach 40 feet or more.

It was discovered in Brazil by French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville in the 18th century and named after him.

The showy 'petals' are modified leaves called bracts; the true flowers are small, tubular, and white or yellow, hiding within.

Bougainvillea is not a succulent; it has thin leaves and woody stems. Its drought tolerance comes from deep roots, not water storage.

Bougainvillea is considered mildly toxic, causing irritation or upset stomach, but not highly dangerous. The sap can cause skin rashes.

The thorns are modified leaf axils, not stems, and they don’t grip—they hook onto supports. The plant actually twines weakly.

It’s a survival strategy: when water or space is limited, the plant redirects energy to flowering and seed production to ensure reproduction.
