Pétanque is not an Olympic sport. It has been proposed but never included. It does have a World Championship and is popular at the World Games, but not the Olympics.

Sweeping is not allowed in pétanque. It’s a common rule in curling, but pétanque players play on natural terrain without altering the surface.

Pétanque was invented in 1907 in La Ciotat, Provence, by a friend of the French writer Marcel Pagnol. It evolved from earlier boules games like jeu provençal.

Players actually throw from a small circle drawn on the ground, but they cannot move their feet once in position. The underhand throw is correct, but the standing position is misleading—feet must stay planted.

Regulation pétanque balls are steel but often filled with sand or lead shot for balance. Hollow balls would be too light and illegal in competitive play.

Cochonnet literally translates to 'piglet' or 'little pig.' It is usually made of wood, though some modern versions are plastic. The term dates back to the 19th century.

The official rule is first to 13 points, but in some tournaments or casual games, players extend to 15 or even 11. The 13-point standard is from French federation rules.

Pétanque has three formats: singles (1v1, 3 balls each), doubles (2v2, 3 balls each), and triples (3v3, 2 balls each). This flexibility is unique among boules sports.
