The Paralympic Games Trivia Questions

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) governs the Paralympic Games. The IOC organizes the Olympic Games. The two organizations cooperate but remain separate entities.

The Paralympic Games include athletes with a wide range of impairments: physical, visual, and intellectual. Wheelchair users are one category, but many athletes compete standing or with prosthetics.

Dr. Ludwig Guttmann organized the 1948 Stoke Mandeville Games for World War II veterans with spinal injuries. This event is recognized as the direct precursor to the modern Paralympic Games.

The first official Paralympic Games took place in Rome in 1960, immediately after the Olympic Games. They grew out of the Stoke Mandeville Games, which started in 1948 for World War II veterans.

Goalball was created in 1946 to rehabilitate visually impaired veterans. It became a Paralympic sport in 1976. Players use a ball with bells, relying on sound to locate it.

Classification groups athletes with similar impairments, but medals are awarded based on athletic performance within each class. The best performance wins, just like in Olympic competition.

Starting with the 1988 Seoul Games, the Summer Paralympics have been hosted in the same city as the Olympics, following an agreement between the IPC and IOC.
